Understanding Vimshottari Dasha: Navigating the 120-Year Planetary Cycle

In the classical Vedic worldview, time is not an arbitrary mechanical progression, but a rhythmic celestial unfolding governed by cosmic consciousness. Among the various dasha systems detailed by Maharishi Parashara in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, Vimshottari Dasha is explicitly established as the supreme predictive framework for humanity in Kali Yuga.

The word Vimshottari literally translates to "one hundred and twenty." Under this framework, human life potential is mapped across an archetypal 120-year cycle divided among the nine Vedic planets (Navagrahas). Each planet rules a specific duration: Sun (6 years), Moon (10 years), Mars (7 years), Rahu (18 years), Jupiter (16 years), Saturn (19 years), Mercury (17 years), Ketu (7 years), and Venus (20 years).

The starting point of your individual dasha sequence is determined solely by the precise longitudinal degree of the Moon at the exact moment of birth. The Nakshatra occupied by the Moon dictates which planetary lord initiates the cycle, as well as the balance of dasha remaining at birth.

Within each major period (Mahadasha), there are nine proportionate sub-periods known as Antardashas. While the Mahadasha sets the overarching environmental climate, the Antardasha specifies the immediate seasonal weather and tangible events.
